Famous Ghats in Varanasi

Varanasi is one of the oldest living and one of the most sacred cities of India and probably in the world. Assi Ghat:

 

Situated in the southern end of the city Assi ghat is a quiet, peaceful and tranquil ghat which holds immense relevance to the Hindus. There is a Shiv lingam present near the pipal tree close to the ghat area where pilgrims visit to worship lord Shiva as well as take a dip in the holy water to wash away their sins. Dashashwamedh Ghat:

 

This is the mian and the most important ghat of Varanasi. Located close to one of the most sacred jyotirlingas - Kashi Vishwanath, the ghat is one of the most spectacular ghats in India. As per Hindu legend the ghat was built by Lord Brahma to welcome Lord Shiva making it one of the oldest and holiest ghats in India. The glorious evening aarti which is performed in the ghat is a sight to behold. The entire premise radiates a complete and wholesome spiritual aura which is caused by the incense aarti and the flowers.

Man Mandir Ghat:


 
Architecturally speaking, this ghat is one of the most striking ghats of Varanasi. The architectural design and structure represents the classical and exquisite Indian Rajput architecture. This ghat was built by Maharaja Man Singh of Jaipur during the 1600s. Another unique and additional feature which attracts a lot of tourists to this place is an observatory which was added during the 1730s by Sawai Jai Singh 2 and also includes several astronomical instruments which is in good condition.

Scindia Ghat:

 

Built during the 1830s by the Scindias, this iconic ghat lay on the borders of the famous Manikarnika ghat. There is also a tilted temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and can be found laying almost submerged within the Ganga river. It is said that the temple has imploded under its own weight causing it to submerge. It is also believed that the Hindu goddess of fire - Agni - was born here making this ghat even more holy and pious.

Bhonsale Ghat:

 

Constructed tastefully by the Maratha king Bhonsale of Nagpur during the year 1780, this ghat is the classic representation and contribution of the Maratha rulers in the field of spirituality. Some of the major shrines present in this ghat include - Laksminarayan mandir, Yameshwar mandir and yamaditya mandir.
